Solar Myths That Still Stop People From Going Solar
Solar technology has changed significantly.
Yet some of the same myths that existed years ago still prevent homeowners and businesses from considering solar.
Let's separate the common misconceptions from the actual project considerations.
Myth #1: "Solar Only Works in Hot, Sunny Places."
Solar panels don't require extreme heat.
They require sunlight.
Ontario receives substantial solar radiation throughout the year, including during colder months.
In fact, solar modules generally operate more efficiently at cooler temperatures, although winter snow, shorter daylight hours, and weather conditions can reduce production.
The question isn't whether Ontario gets sunlight.
The question is whether your property has enough usable solar exposure to justify a system.
Myth #2: "Solar Doesn't Work in Winter."
Solar systems continue generating electricity during winter.
Snow accumulation can temporarily reduce production, but panels can resume production once the snow clears.
Winter production is simply different from summer production because of daylight hours, weather, and sun position.
Myth #3: "You Need a Perfect South-Facing Roof."
South-facing roofs can provide excellent solar exposure.
But they aren't the only option.
East- and west-facing roof sections can also contribute useful solar production depending on the property.
Modern solar design evaluates the actual roof geometry, orientation, shading, module technology, and electricity consumption.
Myth #4: "You Need a Huge Roof."
Not necessarily.
System size should be based on the property's electricity requirements and usable solar area.
A smaller roof can still support a useful solar system.
The question is how much energy the property uses and what the available roof can realistically produce.
Myth #5: "Solar Means I'll Never Need the Grid Again."
Most grid-connected solar systems are not designed to eliminate the electrical grid completely.
The grid remains part of the energy system.
If energy independence or outage protection is important, battery storage and appropriate backup configuration should be considered.
Myth #6: "More Panels Always Means More Savings."
Not necessarily.
A system that is oversized relative to the property's consumption may not provide the best economic outcome.
System design should consider electricity consumption, utility rules, incentives, available roof space, future loads, and how excess generation will be handled.
Myth #7: "Solar Panels Are Maintenance-Free."
Solar systems are relatively low maintenance, but that doesn't mean they should never be inspected.
Monitoring is particularly important.
A system can continue to look perfectly normal on the roof while an inverter, optimizer, communication device, or individual module is underperforming.
Myth #8: "Solar Is Only for Homeowners."
Commercial solar can be particularly valuable for properties with significant daytime electricity consumption.
Businesses can evaluate solar alongside energy management, battery storage, EV charging, lighting upgrades, and other building improvements.
Myth #9: "The Government Pays for Your Solar."
Incentives can reduce the cost of an eligible project, but they don't make solar free.
Ontario's current Home Renovation Savings Program provides eligible homeowners with incentives for rooftop solar and battery storage, subject to specific requirements. Solar projects receiving the program incentive must be designed for load displacement and cannot participate in net metering.
Myth #10: "Every Solar System Is Basically the Same."
This may be the biggest myth of all.
A solar system is an engineered electrical system.
Two homes with the same electricity bill can require very different designs because of differences in:
Roof geometry
Shading
Electrical service
Future loads
Panel orientation
Battery requirements
Utility connection
Financing
Incentive eligibility
The Truth About Solar
The best solar project isn't necessarily the biggest one.
It's the one designed around the property.
