Solar Financing in Ontario: How to Pay for a Solar Energy System

Going solar is a major property investment, but paying for the system does not have to mean paying the entire cost upfront.

For homeowners and businesses in Ontario, solar financing can be structured around the property's energy consumption, available incentives, cash flow, and long-term energy goals. The right financing strategy should begin with understanding what the solar system is expected to do for the property—not simply how much the equipment costs.

What Does a Solar System Actually Cost?

The cost of a solar project depends on much more than the number of panels.

A complete solar installation can include solar modules, inverters, mounting equipment, electrical work, engineering, permits, utility coordination, monitoring, project management, and other site-specific requirements.

Battery storage, EV charging, electrical service upgrades, roofing work, or other building improvements can also affect the total project investment.

That is why a professional solar assessment should evaluate the entire property before a financing structure is selected.

Financing vs. Paying Cash

Paying cash can reduce financing costs and may provide the simplest ownership structure. However, financing can allow a homeowner or business to keep capital available for other priorities while gradually paying for an energy asset.

For businesses, preserving working capital can be particularly important.

Instead of directing a large amount of cash toward an energy project immediately, a business may choose a financing structure that aligns project payments with its operating budget and expected energy savings.

What About Rebates and Incentives?

Ontario's current Home Renovation Savings Program provides eligible homeowners with incentives for solar and battery storage.

The current program offers up to $5,000 for solar panels and up to another $5,000 for battery storage, subject to program requirements and eligible-cost limits.

There is an important condition: solar and battery projects receiving these incentives are designed for load displacement and cannot participate in a net-metering agreement with the local distribution company.

That means incentive eligibility should be considered at the beginning of the project—not after the system has already been designed.

Federal Programs Have Changed

Solar buyers should also be careful when researching older Canadian solar articles.

The Canada Greener Homes Grant and Canada Greener Homes Loan are no longer accepting new applications. Existing websites and advertisements may still reference these programs, but they should not be treated as current financing options for a new project.

Programs change. Eligibility changes. Incentive amounts change.

A current project assessment should always verify the programs available when the project is being planned.

Commercial Solar Financing

Commercial solar financing is a different conversation.

Businesses may evaluate a solar project based on electricity consumption, operating hours, demand, capital availability, tax treatment, building ownership, utility structure, and available Ontario incentives.

For eligible commercial, industrial, and institutional projects, Ontario's Save on Energy Retrofit Program currently provides incentives for qualifying behind-the-meter solar installations.

The current program includes incentives for eligible solar PV systems, including $770 per kW of AC capacity for qualifying small-to-medium systems above 10 kW AC and up to 1 MW AC, subject to program rules and cost caps.

For larger projects, the financial analysis can become significantly more sophisticated.

The question should not simply be:

"How much will my solar system cost?"

A better question is:

"How should this property generate, use, store, and finance its electricity?"
