Battery Storage 101: When Adding a Solar Battery Makes Sense

Battery Storage in Ontario: More Than Backup Power
Solar panels generate electricity when the sun is available.
Your property, however, uses electricity throughout the entire day.
That is where battery storage becomes important.
A battery can store energy generated during the day and make that energy available when the property needs it later. Depending on the system design, storage can also support resilience, backup power, load displacement, and better control of when electricity is consumed.
Why Add a Battery to Solar?
Without storage, solar production and electricity consumption have to occur at roughly the same time for the solar energy to be directly useful to the property.
A battery changes that relationship.
Solar energy generated during the day can be stored and used later in the evening, overnight, or during other periods when the property is consuming electricity.
For a home, that can mean using more of the energy generated by the solar system.
For a business, it can mean using stored energy to help manage building loads and reduce reliance on grid electricity during selected periods.
Battery Storage and Backup Power
Backup power is one of the most recognizable benefits of battery storage.
When properly designed and equipped with the necessary controls, a battery system can provide backup power to selected loads during a grid outage.
However, not every battery installation provides whole-home or whole-building backup.
The backup capability depends on the battery system, inverter, electrical configuration, critical-load design, service capacity, and project requirements.
A good battery project therefore starts with a load assessment—not simply a battery-size recommendation.
Battery Storage for Load Displacement
Battery storage can also be used without treating backup as the primary objective.
This is particularly important for Ontario customers considering the difference between net metering and behind-the-meter energy management.
Instead of sending excess solar generation to the grid, a properly designed system can store available solar energy and use it later within the property.
This is commonly referred to as load displacement.
Ontario's Current Solar + Battery Incentive
The Home Renovation Savings Program currently offers eligible Ontario homeowners up to:
$5,000 for solar
and
$5,000 for battery storage.
The current solar incentive is $1,000 per kW, while battery storage is incentivized at $300 per kWh, subject to the program's eligible-cost limitations.
There is a major condition.
Solar and battery systems receiving the Home Renovation Savings incentive are intended for load displacement and are not eligible for net metering with the local distribution company.
In other words, homeowners generally need to choose their strategy:
Incentive + Load Displacement
or
Net Metering
That decision should be made before the system is designed and submitted.
How Large Should a Battery Be?
Bigger is not automatically better.
Battery sizing should consider:
Annual electricity consumption
Hourly consumption patterns
Solar production
Evening and overnight loads
Backup requirements
Critical electrical loads
EV charging
Heating and cooling
Electrical service capacity
Desired energy independence
Incentive eligibility
Available roof and electrical infrastructure
A battery should be sized around the property's energy behaviour—not simply around the size of the solar array.
Solar + Storage Is an Energy System
The strongest solar projects do more than put panels on a roof.
They consider how electricity moves through the property.
Solar generates.
The property consumes.
The battery stores.
The energy-management system controls.
The grid remains an important part of the overall system.
That is the difference between purchasing solar equipment and designing an energy strategy.
